BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification
Overview
Basic Life Support (BLS) provides Healthcare Professionals and First Responders with the confidence to provide high quality CPR in a variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings.
The Heart & Stroke Foundations' BLS course teaches the theoretical and hands-on skills needed to respond to medical emergencies and ensure the best possible outcome and chance of survival.
Course Content Highlights Include:
- Chain of Survival
-1-rescuer & 2-rescuer CPR
- Multi-Rescuer Team CPR
- CPR AED & Choking Skills for Adult, Child & Infant
- Use of Barrier Devices & Bag Mask Device
- Opioid-Associated Life Threatening Emergencies
Certification Details:
Certification: Yes
Certification Provider: Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada
Length of Certification: 1 year
Length of Training: Approximately 4 to 5 hours for BLS Provider
Audience: Healthcare Professionals & First Responders (e.g. Nurse, Paramedic, Police)
Manual Required: Yes
Training Options:
- BLS Provider (Full In-Class Session)
- BLS Blended Provider (Part Online + Part In Class)
Recertification Options:
- BLS Renewal: Take an in-class renewal course annually
- BLS Blended Renewal: Take a blended renewal course annually
Certification Requirements:
- Successfully pass an in-person skills assessment for Adult and Infant CPR
- Obtain a minimum score of 84% on a cognitive exam
The Heart and Stroke Foundation's BLS Certification is the prerequisite for these advanced provider programs:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization)
